The cause of high energy of diffusion activation in LiAlO
2
(ion-conducting material with a migration barrier of 0.72(5) eV) has been explained
. Scrutinous crystal-chemical considerations revealed diffusion pathways to be strongly curved and to run between adjacent lithium positions. The findings were confirmed with tracer-diffusion experiments and by modelling using ToposPro software package.
