Search and analysis of cycles and rings in periodic structures
29 October 2025

20251029-02Our team has launched a service for determining all the shortest cycles in a crystal structure of any complexity. To perform the calculation, the user must upload the structure data as a file in the standard CIF format.

The service also allows you to identify and analyze rings (cycles that are not the sum of two smaller cycles) and strong rings that are not the sum of any number of smaller rings. The sizes and numbers of these objects are important topological indices of periodic grids and form the so-called "point symbol" and "vertex symbol" of a grid node. Strong rings are used when constructing a tiling of a periodic grid. The service functionality allows you to obtain point and vertex symbols, including for strong rings.

A more detailed description can be found in the article Applied Topological Analysis of Crystal Structures with the Program Package ToposPro by Prof. Vladislav Blatov, Prof. Alexander Shevchenko and Prof. Davide Proserpio.

The developers of the corresponding script and service are Igor' Karpukhin and Alexander Shabalin under the supervision of Prof. Vladislav Blatov.
